Historical background research

The purpose of historical background research is to give the customer information on the presence of conventional explosives, and the associated risks.

The research is divided into two main phases:
• assessment of the scale of the problem
• hazard assessment

The first part of any such research is the compilation of a list of relevant facts. These could be events during the Second World War or even later. The hazard assessment is carried out if there are actual indications of explosives. The hazard assessment analyses historic fact. The specific hazards in relation to future use of the site are also identified. We can give advice or recommendations on further specific testing needs to be carried out on the basis of the results.

During the background research we use the following methods among others:
• Research using available literature
• Maps and aerial photographs
• Local, regional, national and international archives
• Battle debriefing
• Witness statements
• Site visits
